What Is Metal Detecting?????

Metal detecting is quite simply using an electronic device to locate metal objects under the ground, under trees or rocks and even at the bottom of an ocean or lake. Why would someone want to do such a thing?

There are lots of reasons why someone would want to go metal detecting. You can use a metal detector to find property markers or nails and screws buried in your yard. That sounds like a lot of fun doesn’t it? NO It doesn’t.

The real reason most people choose to go metal detecting is finding valuable metal. You can find all sorts of things with a metal detector and they have certain metal detectors for certain jobs.

Let’s suppose you like to collect old coins.  There are coin metal detectors that will find coins buried in the ground over a foot deep! You can find lots of old coins with a metal detector, some of which could be very valuable. There is even a term for this type of metal detecting and it is called coin shooting.  Some of these coin shooting metal detectors will even tell you what the coin is and how deep it is buried!

Finding coins is fun but what if you have  gold on the brain? What if you have a case of gold fever? Guess what…. They make metal detectors that are designed specifically for finding gold! These detectors could be labeled Gold prospecting detectors.

Does any of this sound fun to you? It did to me and it does to many others.

What if you are a history buff? They have metal detectors designed for finding relics of all kinds , from old war relics to hidden caches!

What if you live near a popular beach? It can be fresh water or salt water it doesn’t matter. When people go to the beach they loose coins and jewelry all the time, they have metal detectors designed for recovering these lost items at the beach and you could call them beach metal detectors! Now let’s go one step further and I mean it literally, suppose you want to go in the water, it’s not enough to look around in the sand on the beach most beach goers loose stuff in the water and guess what? They make waterproof metal Detectors too!

So if you are thinking about getting into the fun hobby of metal detecting keep all of these things in mind!
